VoIP – WHAT IS IT? — WHAT DOES IT DO? — HOW WILL IT HELP ME?

VoIP – WHAT IS IT? — WHAT DOES IT DO? — HOW WILL IT HELP ME?

VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is a new service that we have all been hearing about lately.

In short, the idea is that we can now talk to each other over the Internet versus over the “old” land lines.

With the advent of cell phones, Skype, movie streaming, music streaming, and the radical improvement of the Internet, we can now use the Internet for our phone calls.

The big question is, why would I need that? My landline works perfectly!

Why you should consider VoIP with Hosted VoIP?

Virtual Extensions – This feature, combined with the Hosted PBX, allows you to have extensions all over the nation just as if the extension was actually in your office.

Lower Costs – have a VoIP expert review your phone bill.  You could potentially be wasting thousands of dollars per year on long distance calls.

Lower long distance and international costs – contact a VoIP rep to see just how low these costs can go.

Lower fees – have you ever been exasperated by all the fees that are tacked onto the end of your bill?  Many of these fees can be reduced.

State of the art phones – these phones come with all the features that you used to have to pay hundreds of dollars for.

Integrated Voice Mail – integrate this voice mail with your email and cell phones and pick up your voice mail over your cell phone.

Hosted VoIP is usually software based and is typically completely customizable — and it will never become outdated like an analog PBX.

Hosted VoIP usually has many additional features, such as automated attendants, music on hold, voicemail to email, cell phone integration, softphones, etc.

Some VoIP vendors offer unlimited calling in the U.S. and Canada so that you can predict your monthly costs and not worry about usage, like you would with an analog PBX.

Hosted VoIP can provide an unlimited amount of lines to utilize; never miss a call again.

Adding another physical phone is easy and there is usually no maximum phone limit.

Hosted VoIP connects to your Internet, so you can take your phone anywhere in the world and work as if you were still in your office.  You can connect multiple offices or businesses.  You can dial extension to extension, transfer calls, and even see who is on a call or not.

If you get a good VoIP vendor, they can sometimes supply you with a lifetime warranty on equipment. J

A great hosted VoIP solution will host your phone system in regionally disparate data centers throughout the U.S. to save you from regional outages.

If you lose power or Internet onsite, many times callers can still listen to your automated attendant, leave a voicemail, or forward to your cell phone.

So bottom line —- there is no reason your phone system should ever be completely down.

What are the downsides of VoIP?

  • Bad Internet provider will result in bad phone service and quality.
  • You will need a router that provides QOS (Quality of Service) settings.
  • A bad VoIP provider can impact your business.
  • A bad migration from land lines to VoIP will definitely ruin your business and day to day attitude. L
  • If your VoIP provide is NOT phone agnostic you will NOT be able to mix and match various manufacturers’ equipment – this could cost you MORE MONEY!!
  • PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT 24/7 SUPPORT IS INCLUDED!!!  Otherwise you will have to pay for a technician to go onsite, diagnose your issue or replace equipment and maybe even charge a service fee.  L
  • ALSO MAKE SURE that the VoIP vendor can provide remote support!! J

Who provides VoIP?

Many vendors now provide VoIP.  But PLEASE do not choose just ANY vendor.

All vendors will come in and promise you the world but many will not tell you about:

  • hidden fees
  • contractual obligations
  • SLA – service level agreements
  • hidden long term contracts and terms
  • expensive early cancelation fees
  • difficulty in canceling your service after the contract expires
  • add-ons
  • potential issues with migration from a land line service to a VoIP service

IN SUMMARY

To reduce costs, improve profitability, professional image, business efficiency, consider VoIP — but be careful about the vendor and be very wary about long term contracts.
